Join Kearny Street Workshop for a delectable literary tour of new essays from the culinary underground and celebrate the release of a new book, Eating our words, from KSW Press. Edited by food critic, essayist, and editor Thy Tran, the book and reading will feature works by local writers Norman Bock, Celia Chun, Rose Mark, Vanessa Merina, Quarry Pak, and Debbie Sheen. ABOUT SOME OF THE ARTISTS
THY TRAN (editor) is a San Francisco-based writer specializing in the history and culture of food. Trained as a professional chef at the California Culinary Academy, Thy has worked in the kitchens of restaurants, food magazines, newspapers, cooking schools and hungry friends and family. She received an international writing award from the Salon du Livre Gourmand for her culinary nonfiction and a grant from the International Association of Culinary Professionals for four months of travel and research. Her stories have appeared in The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. Currently, she teaches cooking classes in between researching her next book and writing a column for the food section of the San Francisco Chronicle.
NORMAN BOCK (writer) works in Silicon Valley and lives in San Francisco. He enjoys eating, cooking, furniture making, and poetry.
CELIA CHUNG (writer) grew up in Bangkok, the Bay Area, and all airport departure lounges in between. Celia: is blissfully married; enjoys traveling and eating indiscriminately; attends the Mountain View Farmer’s Market religiously on Sundays; is easily suckered into ordering the weirdest thing on the menu; an amateur at writing, but expert at procrastination; is conversant in three-and-a-half languages; is an interim retiree from transportation planning; has one previously published work under 'Tales from the Playa' on burningman.com
ROSE MARK (writer) aka as the Foodhst worships food. She comes from a family of foodies. When she is not eating, cooking, sharing, creating, exploring, talking, reading or wondering about food she is often found Zydeco dancing with her husband Larry. Her day job is a special education teacher. She resides in the city of diversity, Oakland, California.
VANESSA MERINA (writer)was born in Los Angeles and holds a B.A. in creative writing and French. By day, she is publications manager at the Public Policy Institute of California, a non-profit research organization in San Francisco. Vanessa writes short fiction, is editor of the anthology Every Other Wednesday, and serves on the advisory boards of nocturnes literary journal and Asian American Women Artists Association. She just ran her first half marathon and continues to love the desert, fresh bread, lychees, ice water and a good fight.
THIEN PHAM(cover designer) is an artist, cartoonist, printmaker,and high school teacher living in the East bay. He has done several mini comics, and writes and illutrate a weekly food review comic for the East Bay Express. His long graphic novel SUMO will be out this summer .
