Speculative Fiction Weekend Writing Intensive
with Mary Anne Mohanraj

Course description

Speculative fiction is an umbrella term inclusively spanning the breadth of fantastic literature, encompassing literature ranging from hard science fiction (Farenheit 451, Star Trek, Heroes) to fantasy (Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings) to ghost stories (Edgar Allen Poe) to horror (the works of Stephen King) to folk and fairy tales (Cinderella, The Princess Bride) to magical realism (One Hundred Years of Solitude, Like Water for Chocolate) to epic tales (the Ramayana, the Illiad) to slipstream (Kavalier and Clay,Midnight's Children), to modern myth-making (The Once and Future King) -- and more. In this class, we will study the craft of fiction, reading the work of published authors and examining their methods, focusing on character and world-building within a realistic environment. We will write fiction and critique each others' work.

Guest editors Jed Hartman of Strange Horizons Magazine (www.strangehorizons.com) and Jeremy Lassen of Nightshade Books (http://www.nightshadebooks.com/) will also stop by to answer questions and talk about their publications.

Writers of all levels are welcome.
