The Short Story is NOT Dying
A literary reading and chapbook release from KSW's summer workshop with Neela Banerjee
The rumor on the street is that the short story is under the weather. Stephen King wrote a poor diagnosis for this creative form in the New York Times last year: "Current condition stable, but apt to deteriorate in the years ahead." But we may have the cure: recognizing the storyteller inside of us. As soon as we start putting verbs together with nouns -- usually around age three -- we begin structuring the world around us into stories. In this fiction workshop, students expanded their natural abilities to tell stories by investigating the world around them, reading plethroa of genres and texts, experimenting, sharing, discussing, and supporting each other.
This class invigorated students' storytelling capacity and in turn proved, that at least for eight weeks this summer, the short story is -- in fact -- alive and well.
