APAture 2007 Graphic Design and Illustration by Thien Pham Misako Inaoka: Visual
ARTIST STATEMENT
The nature I notice survives in different forms, by adapting, adjusting and mutating to its new urban setting. This manipulated urban nature strongly influences my recent works. I emphasize the subtle details of surviving nature and exaggerate their illogicality to cultivate my own version of invented creatures and landscapes. My world is not a creation of total imagination, but is a projection of the reality in an absurd form. --Misako Inaoka Photo: Misako Inaoka, Departs, Site specific installation, 2005; Plastic, plastic rods, window tinting film; In-and-outside installation at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Misako Inaoka, born in Kyoto, Japan, received her BFA in 2001 from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA in 2006 from Mills College. Her work has been shown in the San Francisco Arts Commission gallery, Walter and McBean Galleries, Johansson Projects, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Southern Exposure in California, as well as in Japan and Italy. She is a recipient of 2007 Headlands Center for the Arts, AIR (Artist-in-residency) and MacDowell Colony, NH.
Inaoka currently (Sep. 2007) has a show at Stephen Wirtz Gallery in SF.
She lives and works in San Francisco.
My interests arise from the boundary between what we call natural and artificial. I observe the physical and social environment in detail, to find hidden beauty and peculiarity-- things such as a cell phone antenna in the shape of a pine tree, birds that are not native to the area, or moss growing in a crack of cement sidewalk.
