Fall 1998

LITERARY

KSW presented a reading curated by Jaime Jacinto at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery on Saturday, October 24. The event, entitled Voices in the Light, featured Filipino poets Jeff Tagami, Shirley Ancheta, Michelle Bautista, and Tim Arevalo, who composed poems based on their impressions of the centennial of the Spanish American War and its affect on Filipino Americans. The reading was part of Destiny Manifesting, a collaborative effort by KSW, Galería de la Raza, Cine Accion, and La Peña to commemorate the centennial of the Spanish American War as well as the sesquicentennial of the Mexican American War.

We have an eclectic lineup for this year's Allen Ginsberg Poetry Cafe at the San Francisco Book Festival, which will include Larry Padua, Elsa E'der, Michelle Bautista, Tim Arevalo, and Nellie Wong. The event will take place at the Book Festival on Sunday, November 8, 3-4 pm, at the Concourse Exhibition Center on Brannan Street and 7th.

Next year KSW will be publishing The Book of Perceptions, a poetry and photography book which explores issues of identity and culture between several generations of Vietnamese Americans.

Writers Francisco Alarcon and Guilio Sorro join Samoan dancers and an Asian percussion group at our Holiday Open House, which will be on Friday, December 4, 6-9 pm at Children's Book Press, 246 1st Street (between Howard and Folsom), San Francisco. This is the first year we will be co-hosting the event with Children's Book Press, which has published several KSW artists. This free event will offer delicious food, books for sale, and door prizes. Come and celebrate the holidays with us.

The Alvarado Project's exhibit, Through My Father's Eyes, premiered at the Jewett Gallery in the SF Main Library on September 9, 1998, with an adjunct exhibit in the display cases on the Filipino American Center (third floor) of the Library. SPECIAL PROJECTS

Plans are solidifying for KSW and Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians' joint fundraiser for Thursday, March 18, 1999 (note the new date) at the International Center's Grand Ballroom on 50 Oak Street, SF. The benefit will feature performances by PUD&M and KSW artists, and a silent auction. Please call 415-543-0520 if you can help us solicit donations. Both organizations will split the proceeds from the door, but the auction will benefit each organization separately.

KSW has been busy with community outreach. We had an information booth at Nihonmachi Street Fair and at Immigrant Pride Day. Our youth advisory group sold their zines at the Youth Expo, which attracted thousands of people, mostly of the younger generation.

The Alvarado Project kicked off with a preview exhibit and fundraiser at South Park this past December. The exhibit will premiere at the Jewett Gallery in the SF main Library on September 9, 1998. A slide/lecture by Peter Bacho will be held at the Koret Auditorium on October 8.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Kearny Street Workshop was the center of much excitement in December when three separate events were held at our South Park space.

On Thursday, December 4, the Asian Law Caucus held an exhibit and sale of Lora Jo Foo's nature photography at KSW. Lora, who is one of the founding members of KSW, is also an attorney at the Asian Law Caucus. The fundraiser not only raised funds for the Asian Law Caucus but exposed KSW to a different audience.

The next day, our annual Holiday Open House was held on Friday, December 5, 1997 at 6 pm. This fun-filled event again showcased the photography of Lora Jo Foo. Children's books featuring KSW artists, including the newly-published Just Like Me, were sold, and door prizes were given out. A special shadow puppet performance was given by Ramon Abad and Patty Cachapero. Many thanks to the board of directors of KSW for making this event an annual success.

The following week, on December 11, we co-hosted a fundraiser for the Alvarado Project at South Park. A capacity crowd of educators, historians, artists, seniors, relatives of the Alvarado family, and other members of the Filipino community came to see a preview exhibition of 12 photographs from the collection of Ricardo Alvarado and to hear speeches by Nery Gotico, Joe Julian, Ernesto Lorente and others. Mayor Willie Brown showed up and stayed to party and mingle with the Alvarado family and guests.

If you missed the live performance, KSW and Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians will show the edited video of I-Hotel/the Fall, the multi-media dance theater piece done this past August at the I-Hotel site in mid-April, 1998, time and place to be announced. The joint fundraiser will feature performances by PUD&M dancers. For more information call 415-543-0520.
