Program News 2000Fall 2000LITERARYKSW will present a reading featuring Koon Woon, with Edmond Chow, Maiana Minahal, and Truong Tran on November 19, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. All of the poets were born overseas. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program. KSW-Next's second APAture expo was a huge success. Readers at this year's expo included Brian Komei Dempster, Meeta Malhi, Shawna Ryan, Jay Ruben Dayrit, and others. Nancy Hom read her works at her art retrospective at ODC Theater on August 20s. KSW will publish an anthology of creative writing about the internment camp experience in conjunction with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) in February. PERFORMING ARTSAPAture presented roughly 22 performances by artists or arts groups, including 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors, Teatro ng Tanan, 8th Wonder, and many others. The expo also featured 10 DJs and bands. VISUAL ARTSOur showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, will travel to the Euphrat Gallery and Evergreen College from February 22 to April 12, 2001. It will return to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation in May; then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles. A symposium for the Angel Island Project was held at the Main Library on September 23, 2000. Executive Director Nancy Hom held a retrospective of her silkscreen work at ODC Theater in San Francisco from August 20 through September 10, 2000. APAture kicked off with a gallery exhibit opening on September 14, 2000 at SomArts. About 200 people attended the reception. The exhibit, which featured 20 visual artists, was up through September 30th. Fifteen filmmakers showed their films at APAture's Film and Video night. KSW-Next's collaborative exhibition with the Galería de la Raza entitled atlas(t), originally scheduled for November, has been postponed until February. WORKSHOPSKSW will be presenting a year-long series of creative writing classes next year, beginning in January. SPECIAL PROJECTSClaire Light hosted a house party for APAture in August. Over 50 volunteers participated in this year's APAture. To show our appreciation, KSW hosted a special party for them on November 11 at Locus. On Thursday, December 7, 6 to 9 pm, KSW's Board of Directors invite you to our Holiday Party and Housewarming. Summer 2000LITERARYA special benefit reading for APAture, featuring Sabina Chen, Brian Komei Dempster, and Jay Ruben Dayrit, was held on July 15, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. On Sunday, August 20, Nancy Hom will read her works at the opening reception of her visual arts retrospective at ODC Theater Gallery, 3153 17th Street, S.F. PERFORMING ARTSKSW-Next is busy organizing and developing collaborative interdisciplinary projects in preparation for our second APAture expo, which runs from September 26 through September 30 at SOMArts in San Francisco. VISUAL ARTSOur showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, premiered onsite at Angel Island on June 17, 2000. The catalogue, designed by Zand Gee, is available for $15 plus sales tax (make check out to KSW and include $3 shipping/ handling fee). Our thanks to everyone for making the opening a success. Executive Director Nancy Hom will be having a retrospective of her silkscreen work at ODC Theater, 3153 17th Street (and Shotwell) in San Francisco from August 20 through September 10, 2000. The work spans her 25-year career as a graphic artist for the non-profit sector. The reception is on Sunday, August 20, from 3 to 6 pm. Nancy will give a slide presentation of her visual artwork and a selected reading of her literary pieces. Some posters, limited print editions, children's books, and cards will be for sale at the reception. Half of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to KSW. APAture kicks off with a gallery exhibit opening on September 14, 2000, 6 to 8 PM at SOMArts. The exhibit will be up from September 11 through the 30th. KSW-Next is developing an exciting collaborative exhibition with the Galería de la Raza entitled atlas(t), a series of conceptual maps that focus on framing the life of our communities in San Francisco. WORKSHOPSKSW's Creative Writing instructor, Brian Komei Dempster held an intensive weekend workshop on May 12 and 13 for writers who wanted feedback on their existing work. Brian also held a professional development seminar for writers on July 15, 2000. SPECIAL PROJECTSKSW-Next has been organizing a series of house parties as APAture fundraisers. Members hosted readings and performances to benefit the expo. On Friday, May 12, Annie Koh hosted a party at her house to benefit APAture and celebrate her 22nd birthday. Russell Gonzaga and Annie read their work. On Saturday, June 24, Annie Koh, Robynn Takayama, Ernest Mark, Rosa Chen, Kristin Haynes and Claire Light volunteered for "Pink Saturday," the block party preceding the Pride March on Sunday. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence organized the party and asked non-profits for volunteers to collect donations at the barricades. The Sisters, in turn, paid the organizations $50 for each volunteer they brought in. Also on June 24, Wei Ming Dariotis and Dan Wu hosted a party in honor of Wei Ming's 31st birthday and to benefit APAture. Andrew Amarao and Michael Cheng DJed. The evening featured open mike, and tarot readings by Michelle Bautista. On Saturday, July 15, Sabina Chen organized a literary reading at the San Francisco Art Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program to benefit APAture. Sabina, Jay Ruben Dayrit and Brian Komei Dempster all read recent poetry and fiction. Claire Light will host a house party for APAture in August. Ernest Mark will host a home-cooked Pan-Asian meal in October to benefit the organization. Spring 2000LITERARYA reading of the students of Brian Komei Dempster's creative writing class was held on April 14, 2000 at the JCCCNC. Eleven readers, including Brian himself, read at this popular event. An anthology of student work, Writings From the Long Table II, is available for $5. Send checks to KSW plus $1 shipping fee. The exhibit, entitled From Sojourners to Skateboarders: Chinatown in Transition, features photographs that address the changing nature of Chinatown. The show has been extended until May 27. There will be a poetry reading on May 27, from 2 to 4 pm. Our showcase exhibition, "made in usa: Angel Island Shhh" premieres onsite at Angel Island on June 17, 2000. Opening festivities will be held from 12 to 3 PM. Artist Flo Oy Wong held a preview party at her studio on April 30. Gordon Chun is designing and overseeing the exhibition installation. Winter 2000LITERARYA reading of the students of Brian Komei Dempster's creative writing class is scheduled for April 14 at 7 pm at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, 1840 Sutter Street, San Francisco. PERFORMING ARTSKSW-Next hosted a workshop by People's Artists' Anita de Asis at Bindlestiff Studio. Fourteen participants discussed "People's Art" (as opposed to "Bourgeois Art") and created a street performance piece on the subject of gentrification using spoken word, singing and movement, which was then performed at the entrance of the Metreon. KSW-Next members are also developing collaborative interdisciplinary projects in preparation for our second annual APAture event on October 1st. VISUAL ARTSKSW presented an exhibition of poetry and photography from The Book of Perceptions on November 13-December 11 at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery. A reception for the exhibit was held on December 3 to coincide with our annual Holiday Open House. KSW is exhibiting photographs, poetry, and artwork at the Chinese Historical Society from January 22 through December 2000. The exhibit covers three decades of KSW community artists. On April 8, 2000 KSW will co-sponsor a juried photography exhibit with the Chinatown Photographic Society and The Chinatown Community Arts Program. The exhibit, entitled From Sojourners to Skateboarders: Chinatown in Transition, will feature photographs inspired by the poetry of Genny Lim that address the changing nature of Chinatown. For a submission form, call us at 415-543-0520. Our showcase exhibition, "made in u.s.a.: Angel Island shhh" will premiere onsite at Angel Island on June 17, 2000. Exhibition designer Gordon Chun; sound designer Ed Osborn, and graphic designer Zand Gee also join the team. WORKSHOPSLeland Wong continues to hold informal workshops in silkscreen and photography at the South of Market Cultural Center (SOMARTS). The KSW open studio evenings are on Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. All participants must be a member of SOMARTS (a $10 annual fee). KSW is again offering a round of creative writing classes with Brian Komei Dempster. The popular class, which began January 13 and runs through February 17, filled up quickly with 15 students. The class is sponsored in part by the Poets and Writers, Inc. through grant from the Irvine Foundation. KSW is also presenting a special advanced writing workshop with Garrett Hongo on February 18 and 19. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Chinese Historical Society and the Japanese Community and Cultural Center of Northern California. Writers are expected to submit work for critique and revision. The workshop is now filled. SPECIAL PROJECTSOn Friday, December 3, KSW's Board of Directors hosted our annual Holiday Party at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery to coincide with our exhibit of the photographs and poems from The Book of Perceptions. The reception featured a reading by Truong Tran and music by Ernest Mark, Doug Hirai, and Mike Kobayashi. Plans are underway for a new Resource Guide to be published by Kearny Street Workshop this year. We will be distributing information on submissions shortly.
