Fall 2001

LITERARY

KSW will present a reading of writers featuring Xu Xi, Jaime Jacinto, and Pireeni Sundaralingam on Sunday, December 2 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery, 750 Kearny Street, 3rd Floor, SF. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW presented a reading of works from our Creative Writing Fiction class on October 5 at the Galería de la Raza. Poets from the Poetry class will read at our Holiday Party on December 7.

Roughly 8 writers read at APAture this year, including Sabina Chen, the featured artist in the literary category.

PERFORMING ARTS

APAture featured over 18 performing artists, including eE, the featured artist in music, and Bindlestiff Pinay Collective, the featured artist in theater.

VISUAL ARTS

Our showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, opened at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles on September 29. Also shown are Flo Oy Wong's Baby Jack Rice Story, a suitcase installation entitled My Mother's Baggage: Paper Sister/Paper Aunt/ Paper Wife, and the premiere of a new work based on Wen Ho Lee.

APAture's exhibition at Somarts featured 27 visual artists, including Raj Khalon, the featured artist in visual arts.

APAture Film and Video Night showcased 11 works by young film and videomakers. Stuart Gaffney was the featured artist.

WORKSHOPS

Our creative writing class, "Writing for Performance," taught by Charlie Chin, took place in October and November at Somarts, 934 Brannan Street, SF.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

KSW and artist Flo Oy Wong presented a special 9.11 Joss Paper Memorial workshop on November 3 at Somarts. This ongoing project will result in a public burning of the joss paper in December. If you would like to participate please email Flo at ahlowong@ynn.com.

KSW will host its annual Holiday Party at Somarts Cultural Center on Friday, December 7 from 6 to 9 PM. Poets from the KSW Poetry Class will read, and Toshio Hirano will sing. KSW will be selling books at the event, including UCLA's The Movement and the Moment and JCCCNC's Generations. There will also be a special sale of silkscreen posters by executive director Nancy Hom.

KSW-Next will host its annual Secret Santa Salon on Thursday, December 13.

KSW celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2002. We are planning a big dinner and party celebration in the fall. If you would like to help, please call 415-503-0520.

Summer 2001

LITERARY

KSW will present a reading of Vietnamese writers featuring MĂng Lan, Truong Tran, and John Vu on Sunday, September 9 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery, 750 Kearny Street, 3rd Floor, SF. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW will present two readings of works from our creative writing classes: Fiction class reading on October 5, 7-9 pm at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter Street, SF; Poetry class reading on October 12, 7-9 pm at JCCCNC.

UCLA's latest publication: The Movement and the Moment is a slice of Asian American activism in the 60s and 70s. KSW members Jim Dong, Zand Gee, Nancy Hom, Robert Hsiang, and Gordon Lee are among the many writers and artists featured.

Mark Hellar and dance colleague Molly Barrons performed Butoh at the KSW-Next salon on Tuesday, May 29 at New College of California Theater in San Francisco.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

The Manilatown Heritage Foundation, the Chinatown Community Development Center, and KSW commemorated the 24th anniversary of the eviction of the International Hotel on August 4, 2001.

KSW joined hundreds of artists and supporters at the California Arts Council's Joint Congress of the Arts on June 7 and 8. The event reaffirmed the importance of the arts in California.

Spring 2001

LITERARY

KSW presented APA Women's Voices, a reading featuring Linda Watanabe McFerrin, Jhoanna Wade, and Diana Ip on May 20 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW presented a reading of works from Roy Kamada's creative writing class on April 14 at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California

We published an anthology of creative writing about the internment camp experience in conjunction with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC). Over 200 people attended the Book Release Party on Sunday, April 29th at JCCCNC. There was also a reading and reception at the Consulate General of Japan, Thursday, May 10th. The next reading will be on Monday, June 11, at Berkeley Methodist United, 1710 Carleton Ave., Berkeley.

KSW and Locus will present Zine-licious, a show and reading by zinesters (makers of zines -- self published magazines) on Wednesday June 13th at 8 pm at 1640 Post Street. Admission is $5.

PERFORMING ARTS

KSW's multi-media exhibition, atlas(t): A Mapping Expedition/Exhibition Equipped by Latino and Asian Pacific American Artists, produced jointly with the Galer'a de la Raza, featured a performance evening on March 31 at the Galer'a. KSW members Annie Koh and Iraya Robles performed.

VISUAL ARTS

Our showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, returns to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation at the San Francisco Main Library, Chinese Culture Center, and the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery this month (see page 5 for schedule). The show will then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles in September. Plans are under way to travel the show to the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, New York University, and Ellis Island. The flags were also shown at the Prisms of Time quilt show at the Concourse Showplace Square on March 31-April 1, 2001.

WORKSHOPS

Edmond's Chow's poetry writing workshop is in progress. There will be a reading of student work in September. Our next class, focussing on fiction and taught by Sabina Chen and Jay Ruben Dayrit, will take place on Mondays, June 11 through July 30, from 7 to 9 PM at Somarts, 934 Brannan Street, SF. SPECIAL PROJECTS

KSW is currently engaging in a strategic planning process, guided by consultant Kevin Fong, which will result in a new 3-year strategic plan for our organization. We had our first all day strategic planning retreat on April 28, and will have another session on May 19. Our thanks to Chinese for Affirmative Action and to Mendolsohn House for allowing us to use their facilities.

KSW will join over a thousand artists and supporters at the California Arts Council's Joint Congress of the Arts on June 7 and 8.

The I-Hotel groundbreaking, scheduled for June 6, has been postponed.

Winter 2001

LITERARY

KSW presented a reading featuring Koon Woon, with Edmond Chow and Maiana Minahal on November 19, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. Truong Tran was unable to attend. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW presented two poets, Priscilla Lee and Jeff Leong, in conjunction with the Spring Festival on February 3 and 4 at the Chinese Culture Center.

We are publishing an anthology of creative writing about the internment camp experience in conjunction with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC). VISUAL ARTS

On February 3, KSW and Galería de la Raza opened atlas(t): A Mapping Expedition/Exhibition Equipped by Latino and Asian Pacific American Artists. 29 artists participated. Nearly 300 people attended the opening. The exhibition runs through March 31.

Our showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh (see website), travels to the Euphrat Museum of Art at DeAnza College from February 22 to April 12, 2001. Some of the work is concurrently shown at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. It will return to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation in May; then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles.

On March 3, 2001, KSW and the Asia Pacific Cultural Center (formerly OACC) opened Limited Edition, an exhibit of emerging artists featuring prints by Kevin Chen and Christine Wong, as well as site-specific installations from artist Vu T. Thu Ha, and the artist group of Robert Sato, Ako Castuera, Jennifer Witt, David Benzler, and Ryohei Tanaka. The show runs through May 24.

WORKSHOPS

Roy Kamada's all-level creative writing workshop has ended. Our next class, focussing on poetry and taught by Edmond Chow, will start on Thursday, April 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 at SomArts.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

On Thursday, December 7, 6 to 9 pm, KSW's Board of Directors hosted a Holiday Party and Housewarming at our new headquarters at SomArts, 934 Brannan Street, SF. The party featured music by Art Hirahara, poetry by Roy Kamada, and a surprise performance by Charlie Chin.

On Saturday, February 10, 6 to 8 pm, KSW's Board of Directors hosted a small intimate Lunar New Year Party at the home of board member Glynis Nakahara. The party featured entertainment by Charlie Chin. The purpose of the party was to introduce KSW to new friends and supporters.
