Fall 2002

LITERARY

KSW and the SF Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Jeff Tagami, Shirley Ancheta, Lou Syquia and Virginia Cerenio on November 10 in a special reading to launch the third reprinting of Jeff's book October Light. For copies of this book, call KSW at 415-503-0520.

APAture writers in this year's program included Anhoni Patel, Jenn Lim, and Lisa Ko.

PERFORMING ARTS

Our APAture Festival featured many talented performers, including Steven Low's original monologues, belly dancer Charlise Tiee, and performance artists Gennifer Hirano (aka Asian Princess) and Kristina Sheryl Wong

VISUAL ARTS

Our showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, created by Flo Oy Wong, is scheduled to go to Ellis Island in March 2003. We are presently raising funds to ship the art to the East Coast. Contributions to KSW will be greatly appreciated.

Flo Oy Wong's latest work, "Kindred Spirit", will be shown at The San Francisco Quilters Guild "Symphony of Color" Quilt Show at the Concourse Exhibition Center, 635 Eighth Street, SF, on March 22 and March 23. Flo's art reflects on nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee and his imprisonment by the U.S. government. She will present an artist talk at the show on March 22nd. For more info, see www.sfqg.org

KSW is accepting proposals from visual artists for our big exhibition, War and Silence, opening in Somarts' Main Gallery on May 1, 2003.

APAture's gallery exhibition featured works including Robert Gutierrez' imaginary landscapes, Lien Truong's powerful oil on canvas, and Amy Lam's nine-part installation Cultural Fragments.

WORKSHOPS

Our multi-genre writing class with instructor Truong Tran will take place January 6 - February 24 from 7 - 9 pm at SomArts, and will cost $135; $115 for KSW members. To register send a check to KSW, 934 Brannan Street, SF, CA, 94103.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

KSW celebrated its 30th anniversary on November 15, 2002 at Club NV. Our thanks to co-chairs Michelle Garcia and Romeo delaCruz Carambas and to the rest of the anniversary planning committee, KSW staff, and volunteers.

KSW held its annual Holiday Party at Somarts on Friday, December 6, 2002, from 6 to 9 PM. KSW fiction instructor Junse Kim and the band Strangely performed.

Our next special event will be our annual Lunar New Year party for major donors ($250 and up). This elegant affair, hosted by the Board of Directors, will take place in February. For a limited time, while supplies last, donors who give $250 and above will receive a silkscreen poster by Nancy Hom.

Summer 2002

LITERARY

KSW's Fiction class read on May 31st at at JCCCNC. KSW's All-Genre class read on August 2nd at Build Community Space in the Mission District.

KSW and the SF Art Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Desi Voices: A Reading by South Asian American Writers, with poets Summi Kaipa and Amarnath Ravva on Sunday, August 11.

KSW has reprinted Jeff Tagami's book of poetry, October Light, for the third time. For copies of this popular book, call KSW at 415-503-0520.

PERFORMING ARTS

Our APAture fundraisers featured many exciting performers. Spoken word artist/poet Charity Chi Ramilo, alternapop band The Skyflakes, and dancer Neela Moorty performed at APAture's 7-Eleven Kickass Kickoff event at Locus 1640 Post. Slam poet Rupert Estanislao, belly dancer Charlise Tiee, and indie punk/rock band The Clarendon Hills performed at APAture's Flashback fundraiser at 21 Grand in Oakland.

The Last Ditch Fundraiser at Blind Tiger featured David Maduli & his DJ incarnation: DJ Dmadness, emcee Kiwi, and Michael Cheng/ DJ MercuryBonez.

VISUAL ARTS

Students from Thien Pham's comic book workshop showed off their work at the class exhibition on August 23 at Somarts.

WORKSHOPS

Our multi-genre writing class with instructors Roy Kamada and Junse Kim took place May 6 - July 1 at SomArts.

KSW presented a comic book workshop taught by Thien Pham on June 3 - July 22 at Somarts.

KSW presented a poetry intensive with visiting poet Li-Young Lee on July 28.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

KSW-Next has held a series of fundraisers for its annual festival, APAture. See page 3 for more details.

KSW celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2002. We are planning a big celebration in the fall at Club NV. The event will take place on Friday, November 15. A reunion of CETA artists will take place at Somarts on Sept. 21, 4-8 PM. CETA artist Nancy Hom will speak at a panel along with others at Mission Cultural Center on Sept 24, 7:30 PM.

Spring 2002

GENERAL

KSW has a new look! As part of our visibility campaign generously supported by the California Arts Council and The San Francisco Foundation, KSW is increasing its visibility in our organization's 30th year. We thank Zand Gee for designing our beautiful brochures and Judy Chen for designing the new KSW logo. Watch for a new revamped website in the coming months.

LITERARY

KSW writers had a chance to have dinner with poet Li-Young Lee at Canto do Brasil on March 13. We then all attended a reading given by Li-Young at A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books.

KSW and the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery (CCAP) presented a reading of writers of mixed race heritage featuring Norman Jayo, robert karimi, and Tony Robles on Sunday, May 5 at CCAP. Our next quarterly reading will on August 11 from 2 to 4 will feature South Asian writers.

Poets from KSW's Poetry class read at JCCCNC on April 26. The Fiction class will have a reading on May 31st at 7:30 PM at JCCCNC, 1840 Sutter Street, S.F.

PERFORMING ARTS

KSW teamed up with Locus 1640 Post to present a multi-media event that center around the anthology The Movement and the Moment, published by UCLA. The events took place May 16 and 17, 7:30 - 10 PM at Locus 1640 Post, San Francisco.

There was also a website launch and event on May 23 put on by the Asian American Movement Project in partnership with KQED. Entitled Snapshots of Asian America: A Look at the Movement's Spirit and Legacy, the event took place Thursday, May 23, 7:00 PM-9:30 PM at KQED in San Francisco. Visual Arts

Young and older KSW artists Hideo Yoshida, Leon Sun, Nancy Hom, Ernest Mark, Patty Wakida, Mark Miyake, Kevin Chen and Leland Wong are exhibiting at the Mission Cultural Center, along with Yeung Ha, Wynne Hayakawa, and Tom Sieu. The exhibit, entitled A Dialogue on Paper: an Exhibition of Posters and Prints, depicts the richness and depth of the printmaking medium and links artists from the African American, Native American, and the Chicano/Latino communities. The exhibit runs through May 17, 2002. The Mission Cultural Center is located on Mission Street, between 24th and 25th Streets.

Our Creative Writing Fiction class with instructor Sabina Chen has finished. Our multi-level, multi-genre writing class with instructors Roy Kamada and Junse Kim takes place in May 6 through July 1 from 7:30 - 9:30 at SomArts.

Winter 2002

LITERARY

KSW presented a reading of writers featuring Xu Xi, Jaime Jacinto, and Pireeni Sundaralingam on Sunday, December 2 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. Our next reading with CCAP on February 10 featured Pacific Islander writers John Tunui and Fuifuilupe Niumeitolu. The readings are co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW-Next kicked off the year with an open mic reading at City Lights Bookstore on January 8. Poet Eugene Gloria and Fiction writer Sabina Chen led a group of more than 40 attendees in an open mic that included readings by Eugene's students from De Pauw University, and readings from KSW members.

KSW will present a reading of works from our Creative Writing Poetry class on Friday, April 26 at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, 1840 Sutter Street, SF, 7:30-9:30 PM.

East Coast West Coast: Vietnamese American Writers, Poets and Performers will highlight new voices from the Vietnamese American community on Saturday, March 2, 6:30-10:00 PM at SF State. The event is presented by the Vietnamese American Studies Center at SFSU, and co-sponsored by Kearny Street Workshop and other organizations.

PERFORMING ARTS

KSW will team up with Locus and Bindlestiff to present two multi-media events that center around the anthology The Movement and the Moment, published by UCLA. The events will take place May 16 and 17 at Locus and on May 31 and June 1 at Bindlestiff.

WORKSHOPS

Our Creative Writing Poetry class, taught by Edmond Chow, started in January and continues through February.

Our Creative Writing Fiction class with instructor Sabina Chen will take place on Monday evenings, March 4 - April 29, from 7:30 - 9:30, at SomArts. The class will cost $130 for KSW members and $150 for non-members. Our multi-level, multi-genre writing class with instructors Roy Kamada and Sue Kwock Kim will take place in May and June.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

KSW's annual Holiday Party at Somarts Cultural Center on Friday, December 7 had a record turnout. Poets from the KSW Poetry Class read, and country singer Toshio Hirano sang.

KSW will hold its annual Lunar New Year major donor party on February 16. This special event is our way of thanking major donors ($200 and up) and to cultivate new donors. Our thanks to Glynis Nakahara for hosting the party.
