Program News: General2003SummerWe welcome Marilyn Yu to the Board of Directors. Marilyn successfully ran her own clothing business for several years before becoming the Finance/Operations Manager for the Galeria de la Raza in 2000. Marilyn is also the bookkeeper at AATC. She will serve as KSW’s Board Treasurer. Sharon Li has married and moved to Sacramento. We thank Sharon for her years of service, both as a bookkeeper and as Board Treasurer. We welcome Truong Tran, renown poet and KSW writing instructor as our new Executive Director. Our E.D. of eight and a half years, Nancy Hom, has decided to pursue her art and writing further. Nancy will continue to serve KSW as Advisory Board member and will participate in future KSW activities as an artist, project coordinator, and mentor. Board members had a wonderful time at the annual board retreat. KSW rented Flo and Ed Wong’s beautiful house in Sunnyvale for two days. Thanks to their generosity, we had a relaxing and productive retreat. SpringKSW's Executive Director, Nancy Hom, has received the Asian Heritage Month Local Hero award sponsored by KQED and Union Bank of California. KSW is looking for a new Executive Director and has contracted with the Management Center to assist us with the search. Claire Light, who has been our Office/Program Manager for four years, is now a full-time student at San Francisco State University to pursue a Masters Degree in Creative Writing. We hired Samantha Chanse, APAture Coordinator for 2002, to take her place. Claire has been an invaluable asset to KSW and we will miss her energy, creativity, and passion. Good luck, Claire! We also say goodbye to Annette Koh, who is in Korea for an extended time. She has been volunteering as our webmaster for several years. Thanks Annie! KSW's website is now officially launched! Rick is now the webmaster for the site, replacing Annette Koh. 2002FallOur newest board members Darryl Chiang and Michelle Garcia are profiled in the Fall 2002 newsletter. Congratulations to former Board member Glynis Nakahara on the birth of her new baby girl, Ruby. We say goodbye to Annette Koh, who is moving to Korea for an extended time. She has been volunteering as our webmaster for several years. Thanks Annie! SummerKSW held its annual board retreat on July 13 in Napa. Our thanks to Darin Fong for providing the space. We reviewed our strategic plan and made preparations for the coming year. We sadly to say goodbye to board members Sabina Chen, Glynis Nakahara, and Robynn Takayama and thank them for all their hard work. We welcome Michelle Garcia and Edmond Chow as new members. Edmond Chow works as a computational scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. An accomplished poet, he has taught poetry for KSW for the past two years. See our artist profile on page 6 of the Summer 2002 newsletter. Michelle Garcia works for Independent Press Association and is a multi-talented artist. Michelle will be profiled in the Fall newsletter. SpringKSW has a new look! As part of our visibility campaign generously supported by the California Arts Council and The San Francisco Foundation, KSW is increasing its visibility in our organization's 30th year. We thank Zand Gee for designing our beautiful brochures and Judy Chen for designing the new KSW logo. Watch for a new revamped website in the coming months. KSW is transitioning its finances from Peachtree to Quickbooks. Our thanks to our financial team, Bob Yanagida, Michele Lee, and Sharon Li for all their hard work. WinterThe board and staff of KSW held an all day fundraising retreat on January 12, 2002. Our thanks to Mimi Ho for facilitating the retreat. KSW welcomes new board member Sharon Li. Sharon, KSW's former bookkeeper, brings 8 years of financial experience to our organization. We also welcome our new bookkeeper, Michelle Leilani Lee, who replaces Angel Truong. Our thanks to Angel for taking care of our finances and payroll this past year. 2001FallOur strategic planning process is now completed. The Board of Directors approved the plan in the November meeting. The new plan will be announced in our next newsletter. Our thanks to Kevin Fong for guiding us through the process. SummerKSW's Board of Directors, along with staff members Nancy Hom and Claire Light and Strategic Planning Consultant Kevin Fong, held a 2-day retreat on August 10-12 in Napa for further strategic planning. We also elected new board officers. We acknowledge the resignation of Art Hirahara and Zand Gee, and thank them for their years of service on the board. Kevin Fong, will begin writing the draft of a 3-5 year plan. Our thanks to everyone who gave input into our planning process. KSW Executive Director Nancy Hom took the month of July off to vacation in Bali, thanks to a fellowship she had received from the Gerbode Foundation. She is grateful to the board and staff for pitching in and allowing her to take this much-needed sabbatical. The trip is part of a series of travels she will take to gain further perspective on the arts. KSW-Next members are again gearing up for our third annual APAture, which will be held at Somarts during the last two weeks of September, with the 12 hour expo taking place on Saturday, September 29. Manami left broadcast television producing and life in Japan to return to photography, writing, and to her roots in the APA community. After working for the NAATA and the Lesbian and Gay film festivals, she coordinated arts and cultural programming at the Japanese Consulate. Her articles and photographs have appeared in various publications in the U.S. and Japan. KSW is currently engaging in a strategic planning process, guided by consultant Kevin Fong, which will result in a new 3- year strategic plan for our organization. We welcome our newest board member, Sabina Chen. Sabina is Development Officer at Chinese for Affirmative Action. A graduate of Stanford University in East Asian Studies and of the UC Davis writing program, Sabina has published her fiction in High Plains Literary Review and won scholarships to residencies at Squaw Valley Community of Writers and Breadloaf Writer's conference and is a Writer-in- Residence at Hedgebrook this Spring. 2000FallKSW's new address is KSW at SomArts, 934 Brannan Street, between 8th and 9th, in San Francisco. KSW will engage in a comprehensive strategic planning process this winter, which will result in a new strategic plan for our organization. SummerKSW moves to SOMArts! In September, KSW will begin its move to the South of Market Cultural Center (SOMArts) on 934 Brannan Street, between 8th and 9th, in San Francisco. KSW's office equipment will occupy one wall downstairs in the silkscreen facility. The board held its annual retreat on July 8, 2000. We regretfully say goodbye to board member Joannie Chang and thank her for her service to KSW. Joannie is overwhelmed with commitments right now and unable to serve another term. We welcome Jean Chen to the board of directors. Jean, a former KSW Office Manager, works at Youth Radio, Berkeley, California, as an editor of the website. Before that, she worked at Snowball.com in San Francisco as editor of PowerStudents.com, a website for high school and college students. We also say goodbye to our bookkeeper Sharon Li, who has done a great job with our finances. Sharon will stay on until we find a replacement. On July 27, 28 and 29, KSW Director Nancy Hom and Claire Light, KSW Office Manager, attended a seminar conducted by the National Arts Stabilization. Entitled Strategic Leadership in a Changing Environment, the intense 3-day workshop succeeded in transmitting business strategy concepts to many arts organizations in the Bay Area. We are very excited that aMedia, Inc. is APAture's official internet/media sponsor. Starting September 7, APAture will be featured in the A&E channel of aOnline. SpringKSW has to move! Due to the increased popularity of South Park, our rent will double in October. We are looking immediately for space, roughly 4-500 square feet (maximum $1.50 sq. ft.), preferably in the South of Market, Mission, Potrero Hill, Hayes Valley or Mid-Market area. KSW was honored on January 22nd by the Chinese Historical Society at its 37th annual luncheon at Gold Mountain Restaurant. KSW received the Distinguished Community Service Award for its 27 years of serving the Asian American community through art. KSW has its own permanent website address: www.kearnystreet.org. Check out all the exciting things we are doing. KSW presented APAture: A Window on the Art of Young Asian Pacific Americans, a three day event on September 28, 30 and October 2. The successful event was coordinated and curated by KSW-Next, our younger generation of artists. Roughly 700 people attended the various activities, which included a panel discussion, film and video screening, and an all-day expo of visual, literary and performing arts, as well as zine displays and electric bands. Thanks to our APAture co-coordinators Claire Light and Annie Koh for a fabulous job and to all the members of KSW-Next. On September 28, KSW presented the APAture panel discussion entitled ART/ACTIVE: The Role of Young APA Artists Between Ethnic Activism and Artistic Practice. 40 people came to the Galeria de la Raza to hear Eddie Wong, Betty Kano, Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo, Giulio Sorro, Jean Chen and Tricia Lagaso discuss intergenerational views on art and activism. On November 17, KSW will participate in The Management Center's Board Fair at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. WinterWe welcome new board member Art Hirahara. Art is Development Assistant at the Asian Law Caucus and a jazz pianist/composer who has played at such venues as The Black Cat, Garden City, Bruno's, Rasselas, and Jazz at Pearl's. We regret that we have to say goodbye to our office manager, Jean Chen, who is leaving for an internship with the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Jean has helped KSW rise to a new level of organizational growth. Her coordination of the Next Generation group has injected much new energy at KSW. We will miss her very much, and wish her well in her endeavors. 1998FallIn an effort to increase our rental income, KSW has moved its office down the hall and rented out our old office to Tree Axis, a multi-media company. The partners, Krister Olsson and Stella Lai, will design our website, due to launch by the beginning of next year. We are also analyzing and streamlining our financial management systems, thanks to the help of our consultant, Bin Chen, provided by Business Volunteers for the Arts. Bin has been a wonderful help to us and we thank Business Volunteers for the Arts for the assistance. In addition, KSW is working with Barbara Alvarez on a fundraising plan that will help support the goals of our strategic plan. We thank the Arts Management Institute for providing us with this valuable assistance. We welcome new board member Ernest Mark. Ernest is currently Executive Assistant at the Tides Center. His experience in working with small nonprofits will be a great asset to our board. Another candidate, Art Hirahara, will be nominated to the board this month. KSW will be donating its archives to the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. CEMA will store our work in their facilities and make the material available for researchers and educators. We are saddened by the passing of longtime KSW supporter Bernice Bing. Bernice has been helpful to our organization since its inception in 1972, and we will miss her very much. Our condolences also to the family of Vanessa Ng, a member of AAWAA and Godzilla West. See centerfold for more details. SummerAfter 3 years, KSW has developed a new strategic plan. Our exciting lineup of projects will integrate art with education, history and culture. See centerfold for more details. We are also cultivating a new generation of artists through the formation of a Youth Advisory Board. The first meeting, held at KSW, attracted 24 people, most of whom were under 30. The next meeting will be at South of Market Cultural Center at 934 Brannan Street on Wednesday, August 5 at 7 pm. Come bring your friends and help build KSW for the future. KSW is renting out one of our offices in South Park in an effort to conserve our overhead. At the same time we are negotiating with South of Market Cultural Center about use of the facilities there. KSW's headquarters will still be at 166 South Park. The board and staff of KSW congratulates board president Glynis Nakahara on the birth of her baby girl, Malia. We welcome Robynn Takayama as a board member and thank past board members Chiori Santiago and Jerry Jew for their years of service. Chiori and Jerry will continue as advisory board members. Robynn Takayama brings a youthful outlook to the board. She has served as Administrative Director for the Asian American Theater Company and is now employed with the San Francisco Book Council. Our exciting lineup of projects will integrate art with education, history and culture. We are pleased to announce that executive Director Nancy Hom has received a Gerbode Fellowship from the Gerbode Foundation. This 2-year fellowship will enable Nancy to further improve her outlook as an executive director. KSW, along with Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians, are the recipients of an Izzie Award, given for the text of I-Hotel/ The Fall. Our congratulations to Pearl Ubungen and her dancers, and to KSW writers Al Robles, Jocelyn Ignacio and Norman Jayo for contributing to the award winning text. Amy Yuen, our former office manager, has left for a new job at Urban Arts Institute. We welcome Jean Chen, who will take her place. Jean has extensive experience in event planning, graphic design, and computer technology. She will be a great asset to our office. WinterKSW looks forward to another exciting year as we prepare to commemorate the Centennial of the Spanish American War by focusing on the contributions made by the Filipino community to the San Francisco Bay Area. We will also be addressing the common bonds between the Filipino community and other ethnic communities. Our office manager, Amy Yuen, is leaving KSW for a new job at Urban Arts Institute.
