Summer

KSW and the SF Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Warning: Graphic Contents featuring comics/graphic artists Hellen Jo, Derek Kirk Kim, and Jason Shiga on July 23.

KSW co-presented Coming Home to Manilatown with Citylights in celebration of the bookstore’s 50th anniversary.

Spring

KSW and the SF Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Do Tell: Readings by Queer API Writers, featuring Maiana Minahal, Dan Taulapapa McMullin and Danny Nguyen on March 16.

KSW and Cabrillo College presented In Search of Watsonville with poets Jeff Tagami and Shirley Ancheta, with a special performance by Taiko drummer Mary Kohama, at the Cabrillo College Watsonville Center on April 10.

Writers Nancy Hom, Shailja Patel, and John Tunui read as part of the Association of Asian American Studies Conference Cafe APA Open Mic. KSW's hour featured poetry by writers in our War and Silence exhibition.

KSW, along with Chinatown Community Development Center and LA-based Wide Eyed Workshops and LAEnkanto, co-presented a CCDC youth-led walking tour through Chinatown alleyways on May 8. The tour began with a special presentation of the International Hotel by Al Robles and Bill Sorro. The tour was followed by Dos Babae: From LA to the Bay, featuring LA-based poet Janis Calleja and SF-based poet Melinda Corazon Foley. The reading on May 8, 6-8 PM, co-presented by CCAP, began with an open mic.

Winter

KSW and the SF Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Jeff Tagami, Shirley Ancheta, Lou Syquia and Virginia Cerenio on November 10 in a special reading to launch the third reprinting of Jeff's book October Light. For copies of this book, call KSW at 415-503-0520.

APAture writers in this year's program included Anhoni Patel, Jenn Lim, and Lisa Ko.

Summer

KSW's Fiction class read on May 31st at at JCCCNC. KSW's All-Genre class read on August 2nd at Build Community Space in the Mission District.

KSW and the SF Art Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program (CCAP) presented Desi Voices: A Reading by South Asian American Writers, with poets Summi Kaipa and Amarnath Ravva on Sunday, August 11.

KSW has reprinted Jeff Tagami's book of poetry, October Light, for the third time. For copies of this popular book, call KSW at 415-503-0520.

Spring

KSW writers had a chance to have dinner with poet Li-Young Lee at Canto do Brasil on March 13. We then all attended a reading given by Li-Young at A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books.

KSW and the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery (CCAP) presented a reading of writers of mixed race heritage featuring Norman Jayo, robert karimi, and Tony Robles on Sunday, May 5 at CCAP. Our next quarterly reading will on August 11 from 2 to 4 will feature South Asian writers.

Poets from KSW's Poetry class read at JCCCNC on April 26. The Fiction class will have a reading on May 31st at 7:30 PM at JCCCNC, 1840 Sutter Street, S.F.

Winter

KSW presented a reading of writers featuring Xu Xi, Jaime Jacinto, and Pireeni Sundaralingam on Sunday, December 2 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. Our next reading with CCAP on February 10 featured Pacific Islander writers John Tunui and Fuifuilupe Niumeitolu. The readings are co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW-Next kicked off the year with an open mic reading at City Lights Bookstore on January 8. Poet Eugene Gloria and Fiction writer Sabina Chen led a group of more than 40 attendees in an open mic that included readings by Eugene's students from De Pauw University, and readings from KSW members.

KSW will present a reading of works from our Creative Writing Poetry class on Friday, April 26 at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, 1840 Sutter Street, SF, 7:30-9:30 PM.

East Coast West Coast: Vietnamese American Writers, Poets and Performers will highlight new voices from the Vietnamese American community on Saturday, March 2, 6:30-10:00 PM at SF State. The event is presented by the Vietnamese American Studies Center at SFSU, and co-sponsored by Kearny Street Workshop and other organizations.

Roughly 8 writers read at APAture this year, including Sabina Chen, the featured artist in the literary category.

KSW will present a reading of Vietnamese writers featuring MÈng Lan, Truong Tran, and John Vu on Sunday, September 9 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery, 750 Kearny Street, 3rd Floor, SF. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW will present two readings of works from our creative writing classes: Fiction class reading on October 5, 7-9 pm at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter Street, SF; Poetry class reading on October 12, 7-9 pm at JCCCNC.

UCLA's latest publication: The Movement and the Moment is a slice of Asian American activism in the 60s and 70s. KSW members Jim Dong, Zand Gee, Nancy Hom, Robert Hsiang, and Gordon Lee are among the many writers and artists featured.

Spring

KSW presented APA Women's Voices, a reading featuring Linda Watanabe McFerrin, Jhoanna Wade, and Diana Ip on May 20 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW presented a reading of works from Roy Kamada's creative writing class on April 14 at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California

We published an anthology of creative writing about the internment camp experience in conjunction with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC). Over 200 people attended the Book Release Party on Sunday, April 29th at JCCCNC. There was also a reading and reception at the Consulate General of Japan, Thursday, May 10th. The next reading will be on Monday, June 11, at Berkeley Methodist United, 1710 Carleton Ave., Berkeley.

KSW and Locus will present Zine-licious, a show and reading by zinesters (makers of zines -- self published magazines) on Wednesday June 13th at 8 pm at 1640 Post Street. Admission is $5.

Winter

KSW presented a reading featuring Koon Woon, with Edmond Chow and Maiana Minahal on November 19, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery. Truong Tran was unable to attend. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW presented two poets, Priscilla Lee and Jeff Leong, in conjunction with the Spring Festival on February 3 and 4 at the Chinese Culture Center.

We are publishing an anthology of creative writing about the internment camp experience in conjunction with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC). There will be a Book Release Party on Sunday, April 29th, 3 to 6 PM at JCCCNC; as well as a reading and reception at the Consulate General of Japan, Thursday, May 10th, 5:30 PM (reading at 6:00 PM).

Fall

KSW will present a reading featuring Koon Woon, with Edmond Chow, Maiana Minahal, and Truong Tran on November 19, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. All of the poets were born overseas. The reading is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program.

KSW-Next's second APAture expo was a huge success. Readers at this year's expo included Brian Komei Dempster, Meeta Malhi, Shawna Ryan, Jay Ruben Dayrit, and others.

A special benefit reading for APAture, featuring Sabina Chen, Brian Komei Dempster, and Jay Ruben Dayrit, was held on July 15, 2000 at the Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery.

On Sunday, August 20, Nancy Hom will read her works at the opening reception of her visual arts retrospective at ODC Theater Gallery, 3153 17th Street, S.F.

Spring

A reading of the students of Brian Komei Dempster's creative writing class was held on April 14, 2000 at the JCCCNC. Eleven readers, including Brian himself, read at this popular event. An anthology of student work, Writings From the Long Table II, is available for $5. Send checks to KSW plus $1 shipping fee.

Winter

A reading of the students of Brian Komei Dempster's creative writing class is scheduled for April 14 at 7 pm at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, 1840 Sutter Street, San Francisco.

1999

Fall

KSW's latest publication, The Book of Perceptions, was one of three finalists for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize in the fiction category. Truong and the other finalists were interviewed on West Coast Live in a ceremony at the Asian Art Museum.

Roy Kamada, Edmond Chow, Sabina Chen, Chaya Bhuvaneswar, Amy Yuen, and Truong Tran were among the readers at APAture. Spoken word artists included Dennis Somera, Russell Gonzaga, Alegria Barclay and Maiana Minahal.

KSW participated for the third time in the SF Book Festival's Allen Ginsberg Poetry Cafe on Sunday, October 17, from 12 to 1 pm. The Book Festival took place at the Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason. Poets who read were Chaya Bhuvaneswar, Edmond Chow, Anthony Robles, Dennis Somera, Dan Wu, and Amy Yuen.

Winter

KSW is sponsoring a reading of Stanley Garibay at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery on Saturday, February 20 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, 750 Kearny Street in San Francisco. This special event includes music, a reading by Manong Stanley and readings by other poets representing different generations.

KSW is also publishing The Book of Perceptions, a poetry and photography book which explores issues of identity and culture between several generations of Vietnamese Americans. The Exhibition and Book Launching Party will be held on March 6 at 7 pm at the Pacific Bridge Gallery, 95 Linden St. #6, in Oakland.

1998

Fall

KSW presented a reading curated by Jaime Jacinto at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery on Saturday, October 24. The event, entitled Voices in the Light, featured Filipino poets Jeff Tagami, Shirley Ancheta, Michelle Bautista, and Tim Arevalo, who composed poems based on their impressions of the centennial of the Spanish American War and its affect on Filipino Americans. The reading was part of Destiny Manifesting, a collaborative effort by KSW, Galería de la Raza, Cine Accion, and La Peña to commemorate the centennial of the Spanish American War as well as the sesquicentennial of the Mexican American War.

We have an eclectic lineup for this year's Allen Ginsberg Poetry Cafe at the San Francisco Book Festival, which will include Larry Padua, Elsa E'der, Michelle Bautista, Tim Arevalo, and Nellie Wong. The event will take place at the Book Festival on Sunday, November 8, 3-4 pm, at the Concourse Exhibition Center on Brannan Street and 7th.

KSW cosponsors a reading by Jaime Jacinto at the Asian Art Museum on Saturday, August 8 at 2 pm. Jaime has been nominated for a Pushcart award for his book, Heaven is Just Another Country, published by KSW.

Jaime is also curating a special Centennial poetry reading this fall for KSW. The event will feature Filipino poets who will compose original poems based on their impressions of the centennial of the Spanish American War and its affect on Filipino Americans. The reading is part of a collaborative effort by KSW, Galería de la Raza, Cine Accion, and La Peña to commemorate the centennial of the Spanish American War as well as the sesquicentennial of the Mexican American War.

Spring

In October, KSW will present Filipino American poets in a special reading, curated by Jamie Jacinto, as part of the 1998 Centennial commemoration of the Spanish American War, which greatly impacted the Filipino American community. The poets will reflect on the meaning of the Centennial and the effect of the war on Filipino culture in America.

We are also pleased to note that Jaime Jacinto has been nominated for a Pushcart award for his book, Heaven is Just Another Country, published by KSW.

Winter

KSW presented local Filipino poets Patty Cachapero, Russell (Gonzaga), R. Zamora Linmark, Jaime Jacinto, and Barbara Reyes at the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Cafe at the SF Book Festival on November 7, 1997. The successful event drew a mixed audience of Filipinos and other Book Festival attendees.

We are currently collecting Asian Pacific American recipes for possible inclusion in an oral history cookbook. If you have a favorite family recipe, send it in along with a story about the originator of the recipe, your relation to the cook, or the significance of the dish to you or your culture. The cookbook will be sold as a fundraiser for KSW. Selected entrants will receive a copy of the book and a KSW membership.

Fall

KSW co-sponsored Seeds of Manilatown, a reading organized by the Manilatown Heritage Foundation as part of the I-Hotel commemorative activities. Over 30 poets read at Cameron House, including Janice Mirikitani, Norman Jayo, Presco Tabios, and Oscar Penaranda.

We presented a reading with Aisarema, an LA-based group that publishes diS*Orient Magazine, at Woolf House on September 25. The event featured poets Tony Robles, Elsa Eçder, Amy Yuen, Jeff Trinidad (with Ogie Gonzales on nose flute and kulintang), Larry Padua, and Lou Syquia. Giulio Sorro and Al Robles were inspired to read, too. The audience was also able to view our 25th anniversary exhibition.

KSW will curate one hour of the San Francisco Book Festival's Poetry Cafe on November 8, from 12 to 1 pm. Poets Jaime Jacinto, Barbara Reyes, Russell (Gonzaga) with musician Ogie Gonzales, Patty Cachapero, and R. Zamora Linmark will read.

KSW is currently collecting Asian Pacific American recipes for possible inclusion in an oral history cookbook. If you have a favorite family recipe, send it in along with a story about the originator of the recipe, your relation to the cook, or the significance of the dish to you or your culture. The cookbook will be sold as a fundraiser for KSW. Selected entrants will receive 2 copies of the book and a KSW membership. Send in your recipes by January 1st.
