Summer

KSW will hold a special acknowledgement party for our departing E.D. Nancy Hom at Tangerine Restaurant on September 4th from 6 to 9 PM.

On Friday, August 22, KSW presented the APAture Launch Party, our third APAture 2003 fundraiser event, at Blind Tiger. The lively event featured musical guests Scrabbel and Largesse, and DJs Riff Raff and O-Dub.

Spring

In lieu of KSW’s annual Lunar New Year party for major donors ($250 and up), we held a pre-reception for War and Silence for our distinguished donors. We will hold another pre-reception for major donors at our APAture Festival in September.

We thank Jean Chen and Robynn Takayama for using their birthdays as a fundraiser for our organization.

Winter

KSW's annual Lunar New Year party for major donors ($250 and up) has been postponed until April. This elegant affair is hosted by the Board of Directors.

Debbie Yee, KSW member and student of our writing classes, included KSW in the celebration of her 30th birthday. Our thanks to Debbie for fun-filled fundraiser.

2002

Fall

KSW celebrated its 30th anniversary on November 15, 2002 at Club NV. Our thanks to co-chairs Michelle Garcia and Romeo delaCruz Carambas and to the rest of the anniversary planning committee, KSW staff, and volunteers.

KSW held its annual Holiday Party at Somarts on Friday, December 6, 2002, from 6 to 9 PM. KSW fiction instructor Junse Kim and the band Strangely performed.

Our next special event will be our annual Lunar New Year party for major donors ($250 and up). This elegant affair, hosted by the Board of Directors, will take place in February. For a limited time, while supplies last, donors who give $250 and above will receive a silkscreen poster by Nancy Hom.

KSW-Next has held a series of fundraisers for its annual festival, APAture. See page 3 for more details.

KSW celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2002. We are planning a big celebration in the fall at Club NV. The event will take place on Friday, November 15. A reunion of CETA artists will take place at Somarts on Sept. 21, 4-8 PM. CETA artist Nancy Hom will speak at a panel along with others at Mission Cultural Center on Sept 24, 7:30 PM.

Winter

KSW's annual Holiday Party at Somarts Cultural Center on Friday, December 7 had a record turnout. Poets from the KSW Poetry Class read, and country singer Toshio Hirano sang.

KSW will hold its annual Lunar New Year major donor party on February 16. This special event is our way of thanking major donors ($200 and up) and to cultivate new donors. Our thanks to Glynis Nakahara for hosting the party.

2001

Fall

KSW and artist Flo Oy Wong presented a special 9.11 Joss Paper Memorial workshop on November 3 at Somarts. This ongoing project will result in a public burning of the joss paper in December. If you would like to participate please email Flo at ahlowong@ynn.com.

KSW will host its annual Holiday Party at Somarts Cultural Center on Friday, December 7 from 6 to 9 PM. Poets from the KSW Poetry Class will read, and Toshio Hirano will sing. KSW will be selling books at the event, including UCLA's The Movement and the Moment and JCCCNC's Generations. There will also be a special sale of silkscreen posters by executive director Nancy Hom.

KSW-Next will host its annual Secret Santa Salon on Thursday, December 13.

Summer

The Manilatown Heritage Foundation, the Chinatown Community Development Center, and KSW commemorated the 24th anniversary of the eviction of the International Hotel on August 4, 2001.

KSW joined hundreds of artists and supporters at the California Arts Council's Joint Congress of the Arts on June 7 and 8. The event reaffirmed the importance of the arts in California.

Spring

KSW is currently engaging in a strategic planning process, guided by consultant Kevin Fong, which will result in a new 3-year strategic plan for our organization. We had our first all day strategic planning retreat on April 28, and will have another session on May 19. Our thanks to Chinese for Affirmative Action and to Mendolsohn House for allowing us to use their facilities.

KSW will join over a thousand artists and supporters at the California Arts Council's Joint Congress of the Arts on June 7 and 8.

The I-Hotel groundbreaking, scheduled for June 6, has been postponed.

Winter

On Thursday, December 7, 6 to 9 pm, KSW's Board of Directors hosted a Holiday Party and Housewarming at our new headquarters at SomArts, 934 Brannan Street, SF. The party featured music by Art Hirahara, poetry by Roy Kamada, and a surprise performance by Charlie Chin.

On Saturday, February 10, 6 to 8 pm, KSW's Board of Directors hosted a small intimate Lunar New Year Party at the home of board member Glynis Nakahara. The party featured entertainment by Charlie Chin. The purpose of the party was to introduce KSW to new friends and supporters.

2000

Fall

Claire Light hosted a house party for APAture in August.

Over 50 volunteers participated in this year's APAture. To show our appreciation, KSW hosted a special party for them on November 11 at Locus.

On Thursday, December 7, 6 to 9 pm, KSW's Board of Directors invite you to our Holiday Party and Housewarming. Come see our new headquarters at SomArts, 934 Brannan Street, (between 8th and 9th), SF and help us decorate the KSW Giving Tree.

Summer

KSW-Next has been organizing a series of house parties as APAture fundraisers. Members hosted readings and performances to benefit the expo.

On Friday, May 12, Annie Koh hosted a party at her house to benefit APAture and celebrate her 22nd birthday. Russell Gonzaga and Annie read their work.

On Saturday, June 24, Annie Koh, Robynn Takayama, Ernest Mark, Rosa Chen, Kristin Haynes and Claire Light volunteered for "Pink Saturday," the block party preceding the Pride March on Sunday. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence organized the party and asked non-profits for volunteers to collect donations at the barricades. The Sisters, in turn, paid the organizations $50 for each volunteer they brought in.

Also on June 24, Wei Ming Dariotis and Dan Wu hosted a party in honor of Wei Ming's 31st birthday and to benefit APAture. Andrew Amarao and Michael Cheng DJed. The evening featured open mike, and tarot readings by Michelle Bautista.

On Saturday, July 15, Sabina Chen organized a literary reading at the San Francisco Art Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program to benefit APAture. Sabina, Jay Ruben Dayrit and Brian Komei Dempster all read recent poetry and fiction.

Claire Light will host a house party for APAture in August. Ernest Mark will host a home-cooked Pan-Asian meal in October to benefit the organization.

Spring

On Saturday, May 13, KSW and Winnie Chu will host a special fundraising party at Winnie's home for the Angel Island Project. The event will raise money to tour and expand the exhibition.

Don't miss our annual garage sale, scheduled for Saturday, May 13 at 10 Cerritos Ave in San Francisco (near Ocean), from 10 to 4 PM. Bring your used items in good condition to the place by 10 AM or call us for arrangements.

On Friday, December 3, KSW's Board of Directors hosted our annual Holiday Party at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery to coincide with our exhibit of the photographs and poems from The Book of Perceptions. The reception featured a reading by Truong Tran and music by Ernest Mark, Doug Hirai, and Mike Kobayashi.

Plans are underway for a new Resource Guide to be published by Kearny Street Workshop this year. We will be distributing information on submissions shortly. We may be charging a fee if your submission is accepted to cover the cost of printing.

1999

Fall

On Thursday, November 4, 6 to 9 pm, KSW hosted a benefit dinner at City View Restaurant for The Angel Island Project, our major event in the years 2000 and 2001. Proceeds will go toward the mounting of made in u.s.a.: Angel Island shhh" , an on-site exhibition at Angel Island, adjunct exhibitions,workshops, and symposia.

On Friday, December 3, KSW's board will host our annual Holiday Party at the Chinatown Community Arts Gallery at 750 Kearny Street, 3rd floor, to coincide with our exhibit of the photographs and poems from The Book of Perceptions. The reception and party will be held from 5:00 to 8:30 pm, and will feature a reading by Truong Tran. Come celebrate the new Millennium with us.

Winter

The excitement is building for KSW and Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians' joint fundraiser for Thursday, March 18, 1999 at the International Center's Grand Ballroom on 50 Oak Street (off Van Ness, near Market), SF. The benefit will feature performances by PUD&M and KSW artists, and a silent auction. Please call 415-543-0520 if you can help us solicit donations, or if you have an item to donate. Both organizations will split the proceeds from the door, but the auction will benefit each organization separately. We are also looking for donations of food or drinks for the event.

1998

Fall

Plans are solidifying for KSW and Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians' joint fundraiser for Thursday, March 18, 1999 (note the new date) at the International Center's Grand Ballroom on 50 Oak Street, SF. The benefit will feature performances by PUD&M and KSW artists, and a silent auction. Please call 415-543-0520 if you can help us solicit donations. Both organizations will split the proceeds from the door, but the auction will benefit each organization separately.

KSW has been busy with community outreach. We had an information booth at Nihonmachi Street Fair and at Immigrant Pride Day. Our youth advisory group sold their zines at the Youth Expo, which attracted thousands of people, mostly of the younger generation.

Thanks to all who have volunteered time and energy at KSW.

Spring

KSW's annual Garage Sale is coming up the first weekend in June. If you have clothes, accessories, houseware, etc. in good condition, please call our office at 415-543-0520 for arrangements.

Winter

Kearny Street Workshop was the center of much excitement in December when three separate events were held at our South Park space.

On Thursday, December 4, the Asian Law Caucus held an exhibit and sale of Lora Jo Foo's nature photography at KSW. Lora, who is one of the founding members of KSW, is also an attorney at the Asian Law Caucus. The fundraiser not only raised funds for the Asian Law Caucus but exposed KSW to a different audience.

The next day, our annual Holiday Open House was held on Friday, December 5, 1997 at 6 pm. This fun-filled event again showcased the photography of Lora Jo Foo. Children's books featuring KSW artists, including the newly-published Just Like Me, were sold, and door prizes were given out. A special shadow puppet performance was given by Ramon Abad and Patty Cachapero. Many thanks to the board of directors of KSW for making this event an annual success.

The following week, on December 11, we co-hosted a fundraiser for the Alvarado Project at South Park. A capacity crowd of educators, historians, artists, seniors, relatives of the Alvarado family, and other members of the Filipino community came to see a preview exhibition of 12 photographs from the collection of Ricardo Alvarado and to hear speeches by Nery Gotico, Joe Julian, Ernesto Lorente and others. Mayor Willie Brown showed up and stayed to party and mingle with the Alvarado family and guests.

If you missed the live performance, KSW and Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians will show the edited video of I-Hotel/the Fall, the multi-media dance theater piece done this past August at the I-Hotel site in mid-April, 1998, time and place to be announced. The joint fundraiser will feature performances by PUD&M dancers. For more information call 415-543-0520.

1997

Fall

Our 25th anniversary dinner took place on Friday, September 12, 6 pm at Wu Kong Restaurant in the Rincon Center, San Francisco. It was a resounding success. Over 180 people were there, including Mayor Willie Brown, Reverend Cecil Williams and other distinguished guests. Our thanks to everyone who helped with this tremendous undertaking. See page 4 and 5 for more details.

Our annual Holiday Open House will be held on Friday, December 5, 1997 at 6 pm. On view will be nature photography by KSW founder Lora Jo Foo. Children's books featuring KSW artists, including the newly-published Just Like Me, will be sold. We will also have door prizes. This is our last party commemorating our 25th year. Come celebrate with us at this free event hosted by KSW's board of directors.
