Program News: Visual Arts2003SummerKSW’s APAture visual arts exhibition will kick off with a gala reception on Tuesday, September 16th, at SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St., 6.30 – 8.30pm; $2–5 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds). SpringKSW's major exhibition, War and Silence, took place in Somarts' Main Gallery from May 3-28, 2003. Part of the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center’s Festival 2003, the exhibit opened on May 3 to a large receptive audience. As part of War and Silence, KSW present a panel discussion on Tuesday, May 20th, 7-9 PM, which featured Helen Zia, Tram Nguyen, Rick Godinez and Shailja Patel. For the Association of Asian American Studies Conference, KSW presented a Powerpoint presentation entitled Movement and the Arts: A Visual History of APA Activism and a visual arts presentation. WinterOur showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, created by Flo Oy Wong, opened on Ellis Island on March 8, 2003, along with Flo's My Mother's Baggage: Paper Sister/Paper Aunt/ Paper Wife and Gateway to Gold Mountain, a traveling exhibit by the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF). Collectively entitled Tin See Do: The Angel Island Experience, the show will continue until May 31st.Tin See Do is co-presented with Ellis Island and AIISF, with support by Verizon, OCA, and individuals. Flo Oy Wong's latest work, "Kindred Spirit", will be shown at The San Francisco Quilters Guild "Symphony of Color" Quilt Show at the Concourse Exhibition Center, 635 Eighth Street, SF, on March 22 and March 23. Flo's art reflects on nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee and his imprisonment by the U.S. government. She will present an artist talk at the show on March 22nd. Also shown will be Flo Oy Wong's Baby Jack Rice Story, a suitcase installation entitled My Mother's Baggage: Paper Sister/Paper Aunt/ Paper Wife, and the premiere of a new work based on Wen Ho Lee. SpringOur showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, returns to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation at the San Francisco Main Library, Chinese Culture Center, and the San Francisco Arts Commission Chinatown Community Arts Program Gallery this month (see page 5 for schedule). The show will then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles in September. Plans are under way to travel the show to the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, New York University, and Ellis Island. The flags were also shown at the Prisms of Time quilt show at the Concourse Showplace Square on March 31-April 1, 2001. WinterOn February 3, KSW and Galería de la Raza opened atlas(t): A Mapping Expedition/Exhibition Equipped by Latino and Asian Pacific American Artists. 29 artists participated. Nearly 300 people attended the opening. The exhibition runs through March 31. Our showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh (see website), travels to the Euphrat Museum of Art at DeAnza College from February 22 to April 12, 2001. Some of the work is concurrently shown at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. It will return to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation in May; then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles. On March 3, 2001, KSW and the Asia Pacific Cultural Center (formerly OACC) opened Limited Edition, an exhibit of emerging artists featuring prints by Kevin Chen and Christine Wong, as well as site-specific installations from artist Vu T. Thu Ha, and the artist group of Robert Sato, Ako Castuera, Jennifer Witt, David Benzler, and Ryohei Tanaka. The show runs through May 24. 2000FallOur showcase exhibition, made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, will travel to the Euphrat Gallery and Evergreen College from February 22 to April 12, 2001. It will return to San Francisco for a three-gallery presentation in May; then travel to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles. A symposium for the Angel Island Project was held at the Main Library on September 23, 2000. Executive Director Nancy Hom held a retrospective of her silkscreen work at ODC Theater in San Francisco from August 20 through September 10, 2000. APAture kicked off with a gallery exhibit opening on September 14, 2000 at SomArts. About 200 people attended the reception. The exhibit, which featured 20 visual artists, was up through September 30th. Fifteen filmmakers showed their films at APAture's Film and Video night. KSW-Next's collaborative exhibition with the Galería de la Raza entitled atlas(t), originally scheduled for November, has been postponed until February. Executive Director Nancy Hom will be having a retrospective of her silkscreen work at ODC Theater, 3153 17th Street (and Shotwell) in San Francisco from August 20 through September 10, 2000. The work spans her 25-year career as a graphic artist for the non-profit sector. The reception is on Sunday, August 20, from 3 to 6 pm. Nancy will give a slide presentation of her visual artwork and a selected reading of her literary pieces. Some posters, limited print editions, children's books, and cards will be for sale at the reception. Half of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to KSW. SpringKSW presented a juried photography exhibit with the Chinatown Photographic Society and the Chinatown Community Arts Program. The exhibit, entitled From Sojourners to Skateboarders: Chinatown in Transition, features photographs that address the changing nature of Chinatown. The show has been extended until May 27. There will be a poetry reading on May 27, from 2 to 4 pm. Our showcase exhibition, "made in usa: Angel Island Shhh" premieres onsite at Angel Island on June 17, 2000. Opening festivities will be held from 12 to 3 PM. Artist Flo Oy Wong held a preview party at her studio on April 30. Gordon Chun is designing and overseeing the exhibition installation. Over 300 people attended the opening, which featured speeches by City Librarian Regina Minudri, Library Commissioner Ernest Llorente, and Art Commissioner Neri Gotico. KSW also co-sponsored a slide/lecture featuring Peter Bacho and KSW poet Al Robles with Bill Sorro and Guilio Sorro at the Koret Auditorium on October 8. In addition, there was a symposium on September 19, which is sponsored by Filipino American National Historical Society and the SF Public Library. KSW presented Celebrating the Arts, an exhibit of photographs and artwork by KSW members celebrating the arts in the San Francisco Bay Area at ODC Theater Gallery on February 26 through March 29. Featured were posters and photographs by Nancy Hom, Bob Hsiang, Rebekah Kao and others. Bob Hsiang and Rebekah Kao's work are also being shown at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center on April 16 - May 31, co-sponsored by KSW. On May 9, there will be a performance by guitarist Mike Sasaki, one of the subjects of the photographs, at 12 pm, followed by a reception from 1- 2 pm. The Alvarado Project is well underway. The exhibit will premiere at the Jewett Gallery in the SF Main Library on September 9, 1998. KSW assisted Ed Nathan in the preparation and installation of his drawings, paintings, sculpture and xerography at ODC Performance Gallery in October 1997. Ed donated the proceeds from the sale of his works to the organizations represented by or selected by the Community Arts Distribution Committee of the Zellerbach Family Fund. Kearny Street Workshop was among the lucky recipients. Thank you, Ed. We will be presenting an exhibit of photographs and artwork by KSW members celebrating the arts in the San Francisco Bay Area at ODC Theater Gallery on February 26, 1998 through March 29. Part of the 25th anniversary exhibition was also shown briefly at the Westbay Multi-Services Center. Our California Arts Council artist-in-residence, Leland Wong, is starting another round of screenprinting workshops at South of Market Cultural Center, which also co-sponsors this residency. KSW helped to frame and install the artwork of Ed Nathan, who is having a retrospective at ODC Performance Gallery from October 29 through November 23. Proceeds from the sale of Edçs work will benefit KSW and other organizations. KSW installed a display of I-Hotel photographs at the Chinatown Community Arts Program. Our I-Hotel photographs were also displayed at the Asian Resource Gallery in Oakland, and at Immigrant Pride Day in San Francisco. (KSW had an information table and sold books at the latter event.) |
