Program News: Workshops2003SummerKSW’s Standup Comedy class taught by Allan Manalo performed to a capacity crowd on June 12 at Locus 1640 Post Street. Veteran comedians Kevin Shea, Joey Guila, Brent Weinbach, and Edwin Li, also performed. Edmond Chow’s Poetry Class held a special reading on June 26 at BUILD Space in San Francisco. The reading, dedicated to Itzolin Garcia, featured poems by Edmond’s students as well as his own poems. Some of Itzo’s poems were read by his mother Mia Stageberg and sister Sifra Raffel. KSW published a small chapbook of writers who were affected by Itzo’s death. The chapbook is available to anyone who knew Itzo. Please call the office to arrange to pick up your free copy, while supplies last. Junse Kim’s Fiction Class members read their works on July 16 at CCAP. On August 20, KSW presented Wide Angle, a KSW Intergenerational Salon featuring filmmakers Emiko Omori and Stuart Gaffney at 530 Hampshire. Our thanks to Calvin Roberts for the use of the space. Brian also held a professional development seminar for writers on July 15, 2000. The KSW open studio evenings are on Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. All participants must be a member of SOMARTS (a $10 annual fee). KSW is again offering a round of creative writing classes with Brian Komei Dempster. The popular class, which began January 13 and runs through February 17, filled up quickly with 15 students. The class is sponsored in part by the Poets and Writers, Inc. through grant from the Irvine Foundation. KSW is also presenting a special advanced writing workshop with Garrett Hongo on February 18 and 19. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Chinese Historical Society and the Japanese Community and Cultural Center of Northern California. Writers are expected to submit work for critique and revision. The 8-week session is team-taught by Brian Komei Dempster and Tina Chang. Students will read their works on Friday, March 12, 7 pm at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California at 1840 Sutter Street, San Francisco. The classes will be offered again starting in March; this time there will be 2 creative writing classes for 2 1/12 hours for 6 weeks. In lieu of the Appreciation of Asian American Literature class, we are offering 2 classes in Creative Writing instead. Beginning class will be taught by Tina Chang, and Intermediate class will be taught by Brian Komei Dempster.
