Activist Imagination is an exhibition and series of discussions investigating, exploring, and imagining the past, present, and future of activism.
Kearny Street Workshop is collaborating with artists Donna Keiko Ozawa, Bob Hsiang, and Christine Wong Yap, to create a new multimedia exhibition to help mark KSW's 35th anniversary. The exhibit will investigate various forms of activism over the last 35 years, and will also envision creative new forms and expressions of activism that might hold meaning and relevance in the future. The exhibition will take place at KSW's space180 in the Mission District of San Francisco.
In keeping with its own history of engaging community issues through art, KSW defines activism to be “any form of civic engagement intended to affect social change.” The exhibit will be the culmination of a year-long exploration of this broadly-conceived notion of activism by Ozama, Hsiang, and Wong Yap. The artists will explore activism’s past, through the KSW’s 35 years of archived materials commemorating the Asian American movement, and its present, through a quarterly open discussion series involving KSW ’s network of community organizing, refugee services, human rights, and other groups. The exhibit will build on the knowledge gathered through this research and provide a space for dialogue around activism.
The Activist Imagination project is made possible in part by a grant from the Creative Work Fund through support from the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the James Irvine Foundation. Activist Imagination is also supported in part by a grant from the San Francisco Foundation and from KSW's members and individual donors.
