home: exploring belonging
a new visual exhibition

In a world characterized by constant motion, migration, and relocation, the idea of “home” becomes both increasingly precious and increasingly complex. For immigrant communities, informed by the experience of relocation and tied to a constant, if subconscious, searching and uncertainty about what is home – the country of birth or America - the meaning of home is further entangled, particularly in the context of a political climate in which immigrants are often viewed with suspicion and fear. This July and August 2006, eight artists will explore the concept of home, and belonging, at a new Kearny Street Workshop exhibition.

For Kearny Street Workshop (KSW) itself, a 34-year old arts organization working in Asian American communities, home has been mobile, often located in non-permanent physical spaces—office spaces, galleries and venues across San Francisco—and virtual spaces—online communities and other networks. Its birth in the International Hotel in San Francisco’s Chinatown, its subsequent eviction and migrant existence throughout San Francisco, and its most recent move to a new space in the Mission District, KSW’s home has always been dynamic, constantly evolving and shape-shifting to adapt to changing economic, political, and social landscapes, while still building a permanent sense of Home for our communities. This exhibit will invite viewers  to consider their own understanding of home, and to consider KSW as both a home for artists and an organization in search of a home.
