Celebrate Your Body: Call for Designers & Stylists!

We're bringing back the celebration! Kearny Street Workshop (KSW), the Bay Area's hub for Asian Pacific American arts, in partnership with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) and SOMArts is once again looking to showcase innovative, forward-thinking fashion designers and stylists in a one-of-a-kind event to be held April 27, 2019. Celebrate Your Body puts ALL bodies at the center of the celebration and waiting make your vision something to be witnessed.

Do you value creativity, self-expression, diversity, and accessibility? Are you willing to create or repurpose clothing and accessories for a range of bodies– inclusive of all shapes, sizes, genders, ethnicities, ages, and abilities? Do you reject the rigid definitions of health and beauty represented in mainstream fashion? Then we encourage you to apply!

The Challenge

Started with a poem by nayeerah waheed: “My mother was my first country, the first place I ever lived”

With all the talks on borders and the current climate, reminds one of the fact that our bodies are our countries. We have control over them. That there is a concerted effort to make a person go back to feeling uncomfortable and how that becomes true of people who don't live in a body that is acceptable to the standards of white supremacy/patriarchy. This call is to further previous CYB themes pushing forward with how we can feed into that feeling of allowing ourselves to feel comfortable, to feel at home in our bodies, to remake the places we inhabit as places where we can be at home in our bodies or imagine the world there this is possible.

Your collection should create a new relationship to fashion that unites an appreciation of style with a deeper aspiration for owning and accepting our physical identities as we individually intend (our bodies being the physical manifestation of our true identities), so that we begin to take back that space and make that our home.

ALSO: as part of our partnership with SFAF we're asking each of our designers to prepare one PrEP inspired look (to learn more about PrEP, please read this). What does that mean? It means a look that incorporates the color blue and/or the number "701" that you can find on the pill.
