kalayaan (till every grass blade is afire from every other) closes this Saturday, August 7. We hope you can join us for a small closing reception at 1246 Folsom St, SF from 12-3pm. We'll have books, zines, and art for sale (including some of the works on display!); the archives open for research; and Charlene Tan inviting visitors to collaborate on her participatory weaving installation.

On Thursday, December 10, join Kearny Street Workshop in a virtual celebration of Asian Pacific American art, and to help us continue to create spaces where artists render hope, mutual care, and visions for a better world we believe can and will exist.
Kearny Street Workshop, in collaboration with Asian Art Museum, presented Interdisciplinary Writers Lab (IWL), a 3-month, multi-genre master class for local writers of color scheduled during summer 2020. IWL is a unique program that challenges emerging writers to thoroughly explore and develop their writing skills and styles across multiple genres.
KSW's "Navigating Poetics" class, taught by poet and visual artist Truong Tran, is hosting a final student reading to showcase their work!
In this participatory ritual, you are invited to join in offerings of language, letters, food, and kinship between poets Jennifer S. Cheng, Monica Sok, and Muriel Leung. In invoking a communal space of poetry and care, we hope to acknowledge the connection between making art, politics, and the intimacies of Asian American friendships.
On Saturday, June 13, as part of API Cultural Center of San Francisco's United States of Asian America Festival, KSW Presents Aria Aber, author of Hard Damages (University of Nebraska Press, 2019), and Monica Sok, author of A Nail the Evening Hangs On (Copper Canyon Press. 2020). Award-winning poets and children of refugees, their books explore the impact of inherited wars—Aber, through interrogating historical and personal implications of Afghan American relations, and Sok, through myth- and memory-making of Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge regime.
In this short introduction, we will learn the basics of establishing a welcoming and humanizing online learning community. You will learn the hows and whys behind asynchronous and synchronous instruction, how to plan for full engagement of students, and how to use key tools like Zoom, Box, and Google Drive to support learning while holding space for vulnerability. You are also going to have fun, from the introductions to our closing appreciation practice and learn how to bring that joy to online teaching!
