KULARTS, SOMA Pilipinas, Kearny Street Workshop, and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival presents Filipino American History Month kick-off event with a special Yerba Buena Gardens staging of Nursing These Wounds, an immersive dance performance investigating the impact of colonization on Pilipinx health and caregiving through the lens of Pilipinx nurses’ history by Alleluia Panis, and live readings from KSW and SOMA Pilipinas’ Liwanag Volume 3, the newest entry of the Liwanag series showcasing the evolution of the Pilipinx identity of today through literary and visual arts.

Nursing These Wounds
Nursing These Wounds, is a site specific, immersive dance performance investigating the impact of colonization on Pilipinx health and caregiving through the lens of Pilipinx nurses’ history, whose experiences with Westernized medical education and subsequent migrations laid the groundwork for the continuing global export of Pilipino labor, shaped the United States medical field, and created a fissure between traditional forms of knowledge and our community’s conceptions of well-being.
The project expands on Alleluia Panis’s ongoing development of a community-based ritual and ceremonial language that allows diasporic Pilipinx people to create a space of belonging, informed by rigorous traditional shamanistic practice but within the language and context of the Bay Area’s Pilipinx American community.
Liwanag Volume 3
SOMA Pilipinas in collaboration with Kearny Street Workshop is proud to release the newest entry into the Liwanag series. As the original Liwanag (1975) and Liwanag 2 (1993) amplified the voices of local, Bay Area Pilipinx American artists of those time periods, Liwanag 3 showcases and reflects upon the evolution of the Pilipinx identity of today. Liwanag 3 features a wide range of genres in poetry, fiction, playwriting, comics and graphic novels; Visual arts include paintings, illustrations and photography.

Founded in 1985, KULARTS is the premier presenter of contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts in the United States. The mission of KULARTS is to inform and expand the understanding of American Pilipino culture through works that address contemporary issues in our community. Our objectives are to nurture the artistic development of Pilipino American artists, and preserve the spirit and integrity of ancient Pilipino art forms through research, education and documentation.

Founded in 1972, during the height of the Asian American cultural movement, Kearny Street Workshop (KSW) is the oldest Asian Pacific American multidisciplinary arts organization in the country. KSW offers classes and workshops, salons, and presentations, as well as professionally curated and produced exhibitions, performances, readings, and screenings. KSW makes artists out of community members and community members out of artists. For the past 50 years, KSW has nurtured the creative spirit, offered an important platform for new voices to be heard, and connected artists with community.

Visitor Information
Yerba Buena Gardens is an open-air venue and is ADA accessible. Please come prepared for sun exposure and San Francisco weather. Limited seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. We kindly ask that seating be prioritized for seniors, pregnant people, or those with mobility limitations. You are welcome to bring your own low lawn chair or picnic blankets to sit on the grass/ground. No pets please.
