Around the Community: Storytellers & Activists DVANxSFPL Reading Series
DVAN is hosting a reading at The Ruby on Thursday, March 26, at 6pm featuring Barbara Jane Reyes & Lan Duong, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Julie Thi Underhill. This event will be the first in a quarterly reading series, Storytellers & Activists, produced by Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN) in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library.
ABOUT THE READERS & PANELISTS
Barbara Jane Reyes was born in Manila, Philippines and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the author of Letters to a Young Brown Girl, Invocation to Daughters, and others. Daughtersong Diaspore is forthcoming.
Lan Duong is Associate Professor in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California. Her poetry has appeared in the journals Oberon and Spoon River Review and the anthologies Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry and Prose and Tilting the Continent: Southeast Asian American Writing. Her debut collection of poetry, Nothing Follows, was published by Texas Tech UP in 2023. She was awarded residencies at Djerassi, Millay, Hedgebrook, and Vashon.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Julie Thi Underhill is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and educator in the Bay Area. Her mother is a Cham-Polish refugee from Việt Nam. Her work has been anthologized in “Troubling Borders: An Anthology of Art and Literature by Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora," "Inheriting the War: Poetry and Prose by Descendants of Vietnam Veterans and Refugees," and "BOMB" magazine. She has an MA in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley. She is a Senior Adjunct Lecturer at California College of the Arts.
